UNIQUE FIDDLE STOLEN FROM VFS MEMBER

Anyone with any information, please call Taryn Musgrave at 250 642 1879, email tarynm@telus.net  or contact the Sooke RCMP.

In a robbery from a Sooke home this past weekend, the thieves stole a unique Zak Stolk's handmade fiddle.  It has very unique scroll which is easily recognizable.  The photo is of a very similar scroll, also made by  Zak Stolk.  It has a ball with two swirls (that look a lot like ram's horns) around it.  The tag inside the fiddle reads "Zak Stolk, Lake Cowichan, BC 1994.

It was in a blue zipped case with back-pack straps.  The fiddle in this picture has a brown tailpiece, pegs and chin rest; Taryn's are black.

Hello Victoria Fiddle Society members and friends:

We're happy to announce that Quinn has won A-Channel's Amazing Kid Award!

There will be a news feature and cheque presentation at A-Channel studios on Broad Street at 5:30 pm on Thursday, November 27th.  The station has encouraged us to invite family, friends, coaches and teachers.  We would like to invite any member of the Victoria Fiddle Society to come down (the more the merrier!) to be part of the award presentation.   We  plan to arrive at the station at 5:15 pm, hope to see you there!

Attention members and friends of VFS

Warning  from one of our own members:

I am a longstanding student of the Victoria Conservatory of Music who currently attends a Wednesday evening fiddle class. I’m concerned about safety in the area near the Conservatory and so are many other students. Enrolment may be jeopardized as a result of the traumatic experience I had a few days ago.

On Wednesday Nov. 5th around mid-day, in a parking lot less than a block from the Conservatory, the two passenger-side windows on our truck were smashed. Luckily, nothing was stolen. It seems the vandal only rifled through the glove compartment and that was it. In addition to $50 cash and a pile of CDs/groceries stored in the extended cab was a precious heirloom – my violin that was made by my husband’s great-grandfather. None of this stuff was taken. The person was probably scared off in this highly visible location in an area that has become one of the main locations for drug-dependent street folks.

I reported this incident to the police and waited two hours while the windows were replaced. The experience was upsetting, time-consuming and expensive. One of the most unsettling things was shock and relief that my precious fiddle (which was under wraps) had not been stolen.

I announced this incident to the leader of our fiddle group (Miriam Sonstenes) and fellow students as a warning for all VCM students to be vigilant about their vehicles and violins. As a result of my experience, a fiddler in my group e-mailed me the following message: “It just strengthens my resolve that I am not going to register for the spring session. I am nervous in that area at night – especially when there is no parking in the immediate area at all, and we have to park several blocks away and walk – in some cases alone, in the dark. It was really fortunate that your fiddle was not stolen. “T” still has not heard anything about hers. “J” says it’s like having your baby stolen. Everybody keeps saying this can happen anywhere – but at least in my mind, there is a larger chance of problems in that area.”

I contacted the Conservatory to let them know what happened, along with the following suggestions:

  • Warnings in the building

  • Warnings on the Conservatory website

  • Additional police patrols

Be careful!

Another warning about vehicle breakins:

Just so you don't think car break ins are are solely around the conservatory, I have had my car broken into 3 times in 2 years, all in the evening.  Once in front of Old Town Strings and twice in the vicinity of the Irish Times Pub. Don't leave anything that you don't want to loose in your car and nothing of any value visible - even sparce spare change will make the car a target.
